There’s this hockey adage that tends to come up around the trade deadline, when trade targets are being analyzed in terms of how they’ll help a team contending for the Cup. It’s comes with phrases like “fourth-liner on a good team” or “additional blue-line depth,” with the general idea that a player who moves up in the NHL standings in a trade typically moves down the lineup, because good teams have better players occupying the prime spots. The Connor Murphy trade chatter is picking up steam now that the trade freeze has been lifted, and the Edmonton Oilers sound like a team that could be interested. Edmonton Journal’s Jim Matheson floated the idea that Edmonton’s bigger deadline need is a right-shot top-four defender, and he pointed to Murphy as a good fit next to Darnell Nurse if the Chicago Blackhawks decide to sell.

As first reported by Second City Hockey, the Olympics continue across the pond this week, which means we’re still without any Blackhawks hockey to discuss. Astute observers of this website will notice that we’ve already had some prospect updates run this week and we’ll finish our tour of the hockey world by the end of it. Next week, we’re going to do a midseason check in on our Top 25 Under 25 rankings.
But why should we have all the fun? Instead of us hogging up all the ballot boxes, we’...

On February 2nd in 2006, St. Louis Blues defenseman Dennis Wideman famously flubbed a shootout attempt against Chicago Blackhawks rookie goalie Corey Crawford, awkwardly falling before managing a shot on net.
The shootout miss remains a favorite among NHL hockey bloopers. The Blues eventually beat the Blackhawks that night by a score of 6-5.
That's today in NHL history.

The Columbus Blue Jackets hit the Olympic break playing their best hockey of the season, and that heater has flipped their trade deadline story from “sell what you can” to “how far can this go?” The Athletic’s Aaron Portzline reported that general manager Don Waddell wants to help the room, but the next few weeks will decide whether this is a real playoff push or just a hot stretch that forces a hard pivot.
