On April 10th in 2010, Boston Bruins forward Patrice Bergeron prevented a third period own goal stopping Blake Wheeler's pass from entering their empty net during a delayed Jerome Samson penalty up 3-2 in a must-win game against the Carolina Hurricanes. Boston added an empty net goal to their three shorthanded markers to beat Carolina that afternoon by a score of 4-2 and clinch a playoff spot.

Today In NHL History - Sean Avery Hits Thomas

On April 4th in 2009, New York Rangers agitator Sean Avery slapped Boston Bruins goaltender Tim Thomas in the back of the head with his stick during a television timeout in an attempt to unhinge the 2009 Jennings, Crozier and Vezina winner with 5 minutes to play. Both Avery and Thomas received minor roughing penalties on the play. Boston beat the Rangers that afternoon by a score of 1-0 with

The Weekly Bobbins: A Slow Slide Into Irrelevance

Well, that’s that then. Not mathematically, but it doesn’t take a savant to see we’re out of the playoff hunt. What makes it worse is the manner of it – drifting out of the race with a jarring set of bumps and whimpers. No drama, no fight, just a slow slide into irrelevance. For much […]

It’s not exactly the way you want to clinch a playoff spot, but you’ll take it! After throwing away a point or two via a late regulation loss to Tampa Saturday afternoon, the Bruins officially clinched a playoff spot via a Detroit Red Wings loss later in the day. The Red Wings, playing at home, […]

3 Potential Free-Agent Destinations for Sabres' Alex Tuch

Buffalo Sabres forward Alex Tuch is the NHL's top pending unrestricted free agent (UFA). The Sabres are certainly going to look to keep him around, and there is a good chance he will stay put in Buffalo. However, it would also be understandable if he looked to land a major payday in free agency. Due to this, let's look at three teams that could target Tuch if he becomes a UFA this July.  Boston Bruins  The Bruins have been connected to Tuch in the past, and it would make a lot of sen...

The three-year ELC begins with the current (2025-2026) season and carries a cap hit of $975,000 at the NHL level. With his […]

Morning Skate: Inching

It is Wednesday, my dudes. There are a few different ways of looking at the current state of the Boston Bruins: The good news is that all of those things can be true at once, and last night’s 6-5 OT loss in Carolina was kind of a microcosm of all of them. The Bruins looked […]

Public Skate: Bruins vs. Hurricanes

Maybe an old-school photo can reverse the vibes for the Bruins? Yes, that IS current GM Don Sweeney celebrating with Sergei Samsonov, Joe Thornton, and, eventually, Kyle McLaren! That photo comes from way back in 1999, when the Bruins eliminated the Hurricanes in the first round of the playoffs. I still remember the Boston Globe […]

Is more urgency needed for getting the Maple Leafs’ new management in place? – Maple Leafs Notebook

On last week’s 32 Thoughts podcast, Elliotte Friedman noted that the Maple Leafs are eyeing the Boston Bruins’ retool with a similar goal in mind. The Bruins made a series of trades and ultimately ended up with three top-nine […] The post Is more urgency needed for getting the Maple Leafs’ new management in place? – Maple Leafs Notebook appeared first on Maple Leafs Hotstove .

Rick Tocchet talks about ‘band-aid’ solutions for Flyers’ power play struggles

The Philadelphia Flyers have needed to work on the power play for a very long time, and head coach Rick Tocchet knows that. So, he’s trying out some temporary solutions. On Sunday against Boston, the Flyers had a 5-on-3 for nearly two minutes in overtime. It was a very low-risk option, but Philadelphia head coach Rick Tocchet went with five forwards for that power play. The collection of Christian Dvorak, Porter Martone, Travis Konecny, Trevor Zegras, and Tyson Foerster took the ice to go...

3 Boston Bruins Offseason Top-Six Winger Targets

The Boston Bruins should be looking to add at least one top-six winger to their roster during the offseason. It is clear that they could use more skill in their top six, so it could be a busy summer for the Black and Gold. Because of this, let's look at three wingers who the Bruins should strongly consider targeting during the offseason.  Brock Boeser, Vancouver Canucks  With the Canucks being in a full rebuild, the possibility of Boeser being moved during the summer is certainly the...

Porter Martone is everything the Flyers needed this season

Whatever narratives you can make about this Flyers season thus far, you would have to admit that they have caught fire at the right time.  Their dramatic 2-1 win against the Bruins on April 5th allowed them to leapfrog the Islanders for the final Metropolitan division playoff spot, as the regular season winds to a close and the playoff race starts to thin out. And as they have started to really fine-tune Rick Tocchet style hockey, they may have gotten the biggest boost of all in the ...

Islanders News: Mission DeBoer-ted

On the game schedule, the Islanders are idle for several days, but the events around them are anything but. On Sunday, the long-looming games in hand came to roost as the Senators beat the Hurricanes and the Flyers beat the Bruins, both climbing above the Isles to push them out of a playoff spot — […]
