Victor Wembanyama, the hot favorite for MVP and DPOY, endures a rough night with a career‑low 7.7% shooting (1‑of‑13) in a Spurs loss to the Thunder, though he still grabs 13 rebounds and blocks six. Chet Holmgren counters with a more physical game, and rookie Aday Mara blocks a dunk. Meanwhile, Isaiah Stewart remains sidelined with an ankle sprain, and the Rockets sit Fred VanVleet and Steven Adams for the season opener, while the Mavericks miss Santi Aldama and Caleb Martin. The Pelicans face early questions about defense and size under new coach Jamahl Mosley, and Zion Williamson’s push to fulfill his superstar expectations continues.
In the Spurs’ opening night loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder, rookie guards sparked a lively offense despite a 1‑13 shooting night from Victor Wembanyama. Stephon Castle led with 24 points and 7 rebounds, while Dylan Harper added 18 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists, highlighted by a full‑court pass to Castle. Vassell contributed a corner three off Wembanyama’s entry pass. The article notes the need for better shooting and hints at possible lineup tweaks, but celebrates the young guards’ impact and Wembanyama’s defensive presence.
Opening night of the 2026‑27 NBA season delivered shockers and stand‑outs. The Boston Celtics shocked critics by trading Jaylen Brown for veteran Paul George, who exploded with 38 points, seven threes and five steals in a win over Detroit. Detroit’s Jalen Duren justified his $200 million extension, posting 22 points and nine rebounds in a comeback victory, while teammate Cade Cunningham struggled with inefficient shooting. In New York, the Knicks edged the revamped Philadelphia 76ers, but former Celtics star Jaylen Brown looked like a peripheral figure on his new team. The Oklahoma City Thunder embarrassed the San Antonio Spurs, holding Victor Wembanyama to 12 points on 1‑of‑13 shooting, marking a disappointing debut for the MVP favorite.
