Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports There hasn't been a Triple Crown winner since 1978. Will that change on Saturday? American Pharoah has his chance at making history on Saturday afternoon when the third and final leg of the Triple Crown, the Belmont Stakes, is run. NBC's coverage begins at 4:30 p.m. ET and the expected race time is 6:50 p.m. ET. Here are the Pace Figures and Past Performances for the Belmont Stakes before American Pharoah attempts to complete the 12th Triple Crown. Mub...

Preakness 2015: Pace preview

Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports The runner-up at the Kentucky Derby will attempt to make up for its loss during Saturday's race at Pimlico. The Preakness is my favorite Triple Crown Race. No race can match the pomp and circumstance of the Kentucky Derby, and only one horse can be crowned a Triple Crown winner by winning the Belmont Stakes. The Preakness is the gate to immortality serving as a pass through for the greatest racehorses of each generation, like an airport where you switch planes...

Preakness 140 Preview and Picks

Time to figure out if we'll get a chance to get our hopes up for a Triple Crown winner in three weeks time or if American Pharoah will bounce. Might not hurt to take a look at those other 7 runners, too. # Horse, Jockey (Past winners , if any), Trainer (Past winners , if any), Morning Line Odds 1 American Pharoah, Victor Espinoza (2002, 2014), Bob Baffert (1997, 1998, 2001, 2002, 2010), 4-5* Good:  Well, there's the obvious fact that he won the Kentucky Derby with a trip that resemble...

Contested at a distance of nine furlongs from legendary Churchill Downs, the Derby is carded as the 11th of 13 races. NBC Sports will televise the race live at 6:43 p.m. ET with a full series of undercard races to be seen on NBCSN throughout Saturday. Find the full broadcast schedule here for Derby Weekend. Derby Day!!!

California Chrome's 2014 Derby triumph. | AP Photo/David J. Phillip Let's reunite the band, if only for one more day. It's Derby time. Meaning I'll either look brilliant (2008, 2012, 2013, 2014), come up just short (2011), or be comically off (2009, 2010). We shall see. Now to run that race in Louisville that's a big deal for all us... *also on the Card Chronicle site* Been awhile since I've wrote one of these analyses of a horse race. I used to do this all the time back when And Down T...

Kentucky Derby fever arrives

Mark Zerof-USA TODAY Sports Ocho Ocho Ocho takes the No. 1 position. It's Kentucky Derby Week and for the 141st time, the top three-year-olds in the world converge on Louisville, K.Y., looking to get their picture taken in the Churchill Downs Winner's Circle. Along with a $2 million purse -- $1.2 million to the winner -- the Kentucky Derby provides enough notoriety to enter the history books and turn a racehorse into a stallion with the potential for a nine-figure career. There were about...

Internationals Across Britain

Stu Forster/Getty Images England's playing this week, but they aren't the only national team on the British Isles. Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland - and while we are at it, let's throw in Ireland - all play matches this week. This week of international play sees a few important matches for the national teams across Britain. England, Wales, and the Republic of Ireland all play qualifying matches for next year's European Championships. It is expected that England breeze through qualif...

FA exploring 2026 World Cup

Matthias Hangst/Getty Images Greg Dyke, the Chairman for the Football Association has suggested that England could host the 2026 World Cup. In recent comments, Greg Dyke, the FA Chairman, suggested that England were considering bidding for the 2026 World Cup. It appears that any bid would hinge on the influence of the FIFA British vice-president (yes, Britain gets it's own vice-president in FIFA. Inventing the sport and what-not, I suppose). Said vp, David Gill of England, was voted in on...

Say Something Controversial: Don't Call Up Walcott

Clive Mason/Getty Images Theo Walcott was recently called up to the English National Team for games against Lithuania and Italy. I don't understand why. Roy Hodgson named his 24-man squad for the Euro qualifier against Lithuania and the friendly against Italy . One of the players named was Theo Walcott , who plays for Arsenal . Walcott has struggled to play significant minutes this season due to injury, which makes his inclusion into the squad questionable. For many fans, there is already...

England Name Rosters for March Internationals

Paul Gilham/Getty Images Roy Hodgson has named his squad for the upcoming matches against Lithuania and Italy. Of note is the inclusion of Harry Kane in his first call up to the senior squad. The English national team will be playing Lithuania in a European Championships qualifier in London on March 27, before heading to Turin, Italy to face the Italian national team on March 31. For those matches, Roy Hodgson has named 24 players. In general, there aren't exactly a lot of surprises. With...

Harry Kane is a Future England Star and the Next Teddy Sheringham

Kane celebrates yet another goal this season. | Jamie McDonald/Getty Images Past criticisms of Kane lamented his lack of pace. Martin Keown has compared his quick thinking to Teddy Sheringham. When you've got a footballing brain, who needs pace? Footballing intelligence is severely underestimated in the modern game.  With an increasing focus on stats and sports science, football has lost an appreciation for the quick thinkers of the game.  You can measure how fast a player runs,...

England announces squad vs San Marino, Estonia

Paul Gilham With two Euro qualifiers fixture coming up, Roy Hodgson has to make do without several key squad members. After a winning start against Switzerland last month, England will be hoping to go on a three-game winning streak as they face San Marino and Estonia in the upcoming international break. However, Roy Hodgson will be with our several key members of the squad heading into both games. In the back, Glen Johnson and Kyle Walker is not available due to injuries, while upfront, D...

England U21 squad announced; Shaw in the 23

Laurence Griffiths Gareth Southgate has called for reinforcements from the senior squad. The international break is not just a chance for the senior side to perform, but also for the juniors. With the senior team having just begun their qualifying campaign for Euro 2016 in France, the young Three Lions is in the final stage of the qualification campaign with a two-legged tie against Croatia coming up. With that in mind, manager Gareth Southgate has announced the players that will play a p...

An Almost 5-Game Winning Streak

Nice job by HH and BroHo today in an 11-0 win. The loss on Saturday still kills me though--we could have gone into the break on a 5-gamer. So the first half ends with us 5 back of the Yanks and 10 back of first place in the loss column. The perfect set-up to a second-half funtime comeback. And we start at home against the Royals, just like in the Morgan's Magic season of 1988. I was lucky enough to be at that doubleheader that started all the fun that year. I can't believe all the origin...

Alex From Stroh's...

Fine fine win last night against the blind/deaf school. VaZQuez with a huge 3-run half dong, and two other hits, that guy knows what he's doing out there. I won't say anything about the Rish/Lyons announcing combo because there's just not enough time. That play by Badenhop was incredible, wish they'd given it more credit. I didn't stay up for the post-game but hopefully they played it a million more times at full and half speed and notified the WebGems department if that exists. (Okay I jus...

The Perfectly Slotted Red Sox Game

Out of work at 5. Game had started at 4. Had Castig on way home. Took 1 hour and 15 minutes to get home. Normally takes 37. But the "working in Newport" experience is vastly different in the summer months. Traffic doubles with every five degrees the temp rises. Heard us go from being no-hit to winning in car. Got home, saw last three innings and Kim and I would then listen to Koji wrap it up on the way to the Providence outdoor movie, Adaptation. But as we passed the strip clubs, he blew it. G...

Sox Win 2013-y Game

This was a fun one, hopefully you didn't give up on it. We were down 4-0 at Sweet Caroline time, and it felt like we were down by more than that. Mookie Betts started the inning by beating out a grounder to short, and when he saw nobody at second base, he bolted. An infield double! Remy said it was all the fans had had to cheer about, as he inexplicably forgot about Jackie Bradley's inCREDible catch in center earlier. Two outs later, Sale was taken out at 107 pitches. The next three dudes went...

I Must Break You

The Yankees' Ivan Drago, Tanaka, is headed home for an MRI and has been placed on the DL. Nice to see the lights dimmed on their one bright spot, at least for now. And CC may be done too. It's a shame, I kinda liked watching him drag his droopy derriere onto the diamond. In other news, you can say goodbye to AJ Pierzynski. The man with the golden arm has been called up. And with Holt starting at short tonight, maybe the Stephen Drew self-imposed prison sentence is over!

I Can't Believe What I Just Didn't See

Kim and I decided to do a spur/moment Northampton trip yesterday. So we had the game on in the car, heard us cut it to 2-1, then heard it go to 3-1 before flipping it off for a while. Just before arriving at our desto, we heard the Ross dong. Was excited that it was close again...until Castig said "and it's six to two Baltimore." Fuckity fuck fuck fuck. So we hang out in lovely Northampton, walk around Smith, eat at this place called Mulino's which had a good eggplant thing, do our usual st...

Sox Bats Break Out For Nine Runs!

But Sox arms give up sixteen . And we're swept by the Chicago Cubs. Jesus, I see now in the box the Cubs only had one zero, in Rizzo's RBI column. Other than that, all nine guys had at least a run, a hit, and a ribbie. As long as we got shelled anyway, it was good to see Mike Olt hit his first Fenway dong. I told you in 2011 about how my mom's neighbor is his aunt--he's a born/raised Connecticut guy. I heard the homer in the car, but I didn't hear the stuffed-up Castig say anything about hi...

Replazy

Again, I don't know whether to blame NESN for not just going right to the spot above and pausing it like I was able to do at home, leaving Remy and Don to speculate based on nothing and say "oh it looks like a tie," and leaving me to wonder if "New York" is hearing this and going, "yeah, I can't tell either, let's not even pause it or wait to see if THEY pause it, let's just LET THE GAME END on this play," or whether to blame the secret umpire room for not just using all the angles, pausing th...

Momentum Ends With Something Something

The B news: We almost get no-hit by the Cubs and lose 2-0. The G news: Yanks lose at home in 12, their 7th loss in 9 games; we're still playing the Cubs so I assume their next two starters will stink and we'll easily win both games; and Kim and I just won an amount of money on a scratch-off that's big enough to dance around the room over, but small enough where the mafia won't even notice! So it's been a good night overall!
